Free checking at credit unions
“Free checking” usually means no monthly maintenance fee on a share draft / checking product — not “zero fees forever.” Joinable’s job is to teach you how to read published fee schedules and point at Easy CUs only when those schedules confirm the claim. This is not a paid “best free checking” ranking.
What people mean by “free checking”
Marketing pages often say “free checking” when the product has no recurring monthly maintenance (service) fee and sometimes no minimum daily balance to avoid that fee. That is useful — and incomplete. The same schedule can still list:
- Out-of-network ATM fees or foreign-ATM fees
- Paper-statement fees if you decline eStatements
- Overdraft / courtesy-pay / NSF items (when charged)
- Wire, stop-payment, cashier’s check, research, and dormancy/inactivity fees
- Fees that appear only when a waiver condition fails (direct deposit, balance, eStatements, debit activity)
So treat “free” as a monthly-maintenance claim to verify, then scan the rest of the schedule for the fees you actually use. For membership share deposits vs checking, see Share / membership deposit.
Common fee types to check on schedules
Open the CU’s consumer fee schedule (PDF or HTML) and product page together. Look for these lines — wording varies:
- Monthly maintenance / service / account fee — the core “is this free?” line. Note any if conditions (minimum balance, age, relationship).
- Minimum balance to open or to avoid a fee — opening deposit ≠ ongoing balance to waive maintenance.
- Direct-deposit / eStatement / debit-activity waivers — many “free if…” products charge when you miss a month’s requirements.
- Paper statements — often a small monthly fee when eStatements are off (separate from maintenance).
- Inactivity / dormant account — can hit rarely used savings or checking after a published idle period.
- ATM / shared-branch — own-network free ≠ every machine free. See Credit union ATM networks.
- Overdraft / NSF / returned item — dollar amounts and opt-in rules change; Joinable does not invent them.
If a listing on Joinable says “Not published on listing” or “Confirm on fee schedule,” that means we did not transcribe a safe monthly-fee claim — open the CU’s own disclosures.
How credit unions structure share draft / checking
At a credit union you usually become a member first (field of membership + a primary share / savings), then open a share draft (checking) product. The share deposit is typically a small dollar amount you keep on deposit — it is not the same thing as a monthly checking fee. Read:
- Share / membership deposit — what the $1–$25 share is
- How to join a credit union — FOM → CIP → first deposit
- What is field of membership? — Easy / Medium / Hard labels
Nationwide open and free/small-fee association paths are mapped on Credit unions anyone can join. Metro Easy live/work paths live on city hubs.

Alliant Credit Union — Easy
Alliant’s checking FAQ states that an Alliant checking account has no monthly maintenance fees, no overdraft fees, and no monthly minimum balance requirement to maintain the High-Rate / Jumbo High-Rate checking accounts (a separate minimum opening deposit may apply for some online openings — see their footnotes). The public Fees page (effective January 2026) does not list a monthly checking maintenance charge among Account Basics; other fees (wires, foreign-transaction assessment, savings dormancy/inactivity, etc.) still appear on that schedule.

Golden 1 Credit Union — Easy (California live/work)
Golden 1’s Free Checking product page states no monthly maintenance fees, unlimited transactions on that product, and no minimum balance to maintain Free Checking (membership still requires a published $1 Regular Savings share). The Consumer Services Fee Schedule (effective July 1, 2026) lists Free Checking Account as FREE for monthly maintenance; other products (e.g. Premium Checking) show balance-based monthly fees when minimums are not met. Out-of-network ATM withdrawals/transfers are listed at $2.00 on that schedule — separate from “free” monthly maintenance.

BECU’s consumer checking page states checking accounts come with no monthly maintenance fees and no minimum balance, and its FAQ answers “Do BECU Checking Accounts have monthly maintenance fees?” with No. Membership and share-opening rules are separate (published $10 online savings opening on membership materials; confirm current join pages). Other product fees and ATM/network details still belong on BECU disclosures — Joinable does not invent them here.

What we did not do
- No ranked “best free checking” for pay or affiliate placement.
- No invented APYs, rebate dollars, or “second chance / ChexSystems” claims on this page.
- CUs whose fee pages were unclear, blocked, or only market “free” without a schedule line stay generic — use each listing’s fee notes and the CU’s own PDF/HTML.
