How to join a credit union

To join a credit union, confirm you match a published field of membership, open the required membership share/savings, and complete the credit union’s identity verification (CIP). Approval is never automatic — even on Easy paths.

Joinable only paraphrases published field-of-membership (FOM) and fee facts from credit-union sites (and NCUA materials when relevant). We never invent eligibility, fees, or ATM counts. Always re-check the CU’s membership page before you apply.
Not a guarantee: Matching a published join path does not mean you will be approved. Credit unions still verify identity (CIP) and apply their own account rules.

Steps (typical published flow)

  1. Pick a join path — Find by ZIP, a city hub, or anyone-can-join association lists.
  2. Read the official membership page linked on the Joinable listing (last-verified date shown).
  3. Apply online or in branch with ID, SSN/ITIN, and contact details as requested.
  4. Fund the membership share at the published minimum (what a share is).
  5. Open checking if needed; read the fee schedule for monthly fees and ATM rules.
  6. Move payroll carefully — without missing a paycheck.

CIP in plain language

Credit unions must verify who you are under Customer Identification Program rules. Expect photo ID and taxpayer ID. A perfect FOM match does not override CIP failures.

If the Easy path is unclear

Prefer whole-county or statewide paths over map/“portions of” Medium rows. Association paths (ACC, TXCC, small dues) are fine when published — just know what you are joining.
