What is field of membership?
Field of membership (FOM) is the credit union’s published rule for who may become a member — for example live, work, worship, or attend school in a county, or join through a listed association. It is the first filter Joinable checks before fees or ATMs.
Common FOM types
- Community / geographic — live/work/worship/school in named counties or a mapped service area.
- Occupational / SEG — employees of listed employers or members of listed groups (Hard for the general public).
- Association — ACC, Texas Consumer Council, foundation dues, or similar published doors (labeled on Joinable).
- Family / household — relatives of current members (still subject to CU rules).
How Joinable labels difficulty
Easy usually means county-wide or statewide live/work paths, or free/no-cost association. Medium often means city lists, “portions of” counties, maps, or a small published donation. See Easy · Medium · Hard.
Always verify the primary page
Joinable paraphrases the CU’s membership page with a last-verified date. FOM can change. Re-check the official source linked on each CU listing before you apply. Start at Cities or Find by ZIP.
